welcome back, friday morning. millions of americans waking up to another day of blistering heat. extreme temperatures are putting the nation's power grid to the test. karen travers if it joins us from northwest washington with more on how people are coping with it. good morning. >> good morning. they are trying to cope with it

from the midwest to the east coast. people are seeking relief from the scorching temperatures. this is a massive heatwave that covers 1 million square miles of the united states. it looks like it's going to continue a few more days. nearly two dozen deaths have been blamed on the heat wave already. hospitals have seen four times as many heat-related illnesses than normal. there is little relief even when it's dark. when the sun goes down, nearly 100 cities have set a record for high temperatures overnight this month. as the temperatures are soaring so does power usage. people are cranking up their conditioners and fans. chicago has hit power grid records and new york is expected to be next. we will still been sweating a couple more days on the east coast. back to you.
